Summary

My experience volunteering at the day at the capital for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder helped me to gain a deeper understanding of its impact on families and individuals. Learning how awareness can lead to more resources and support for those affected was eye-opening. I have also learned the power of advocacy and collective action through volunteering at such events. I worked with two local legislators to change laws concerning individuals with these disorders.

I have volunteered for years at my local relay for life. Participating in Relay for Life has profoundly shaped my perspective on community action and the power of collective effort in fighting cancer. It has shown me that when people come together, they can make a significant impact, both in raising funds and in providing emotional support to those battling the disease. This experience has reinforced my belief in the importance of community involvement and the difference it can make in driving meaningful change.

My last big volunteer effort was raising money and purchasing supplies for kids from kindergarten through fifth grade in my school district. About 500 students. My first step was to contact local businesses and ask if they would sponsor supplies. The next step was to source all the supplies, which was a challenge. Therefore, the students had no out-of-pocket expenses in 2022-2023.

Through these volunteering experiences, I have developed valuable communication and leadership skills, learning how to effectively advocate for causes I am passionate about. Engaging with diverse groups of people has broadened my perspective and taught me the importance of empathy and understanding in addressing community issues. Overall, volunteering has not only enriched my personal growth but also reinforced my commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

I've also learned sisterhood from foreign exchange students. The experience of hosting foreign exchange students has been incredible, allowing me to build lasting friendships with people from all over the world. Cultural exchange has opened my eyes to new perspectives and traditions. I've learned a lot about diversity and the unique bonds that can form when we open our homes and hearts to each other through shared experiences. I have gained two sisters as a result of this experience.
