As a Lead my job is to ensure clients are provided opportunities throughout their day to make choices, engage in activities which can be modified to fit each individuals abilities, to encourage clients to socialize with friends and work toward goals of their choosing. Training current and new employees on client's support preferences is a huge part of my current position. By taking the time to properly train staff, they are able to provide the best possible supports for each individual client, promote independence and engage each client in which ever way helps them be most successful. As a Lead, I've become a point of contact for other leads, client team members and all staff on the Green Team with any clients concerns or questions. I enjoy assisting both clients and staff with thinking outside the box or simply trouble shooting when they're 'stuck'. I've had the privilege of creating wonderful relationships with clients which has only been strengthened by creating relationships with their teams. By creating these relationships, it's created a trust which comes in handy when assisting clients through challenging behaviors, ADL's, setting up schedules for the day or even things like mobility equipment. These relationships have also put me in a position to work more closely with both APD's and all 3 PPC's. Getting to set up weekly activities for rooms and monthly Newtrax outings has provided clients with opportunities they may not have otherwise had. Engagement looks different for each person. I've done my best to adapt my way of doing things as well as my training style to provide each client with as much dignity and respect as possible while making sure they are still remaining as independent as possible. Annually, I attend a refresher course for PSR, First aid and CPR. I have also been trained as a med passer, to utilize the Cashe and Pavillio systems as well as maintain my DOT certification.
My primary job duties while at LSS have included assisting individuals with ADL's, maintaining individual's personal money books/checkbooks for accuracy as well as ordering medications/supplies for both the house and the individuals supported. I have also made and attended appointments with individuals and encouraged individuals to advocate for themselves and others even when it's hard to do so. Providing transportation to and from group social events, personal outings or simply a family member's house is another important part of my job. I do the primary grocery shopping for the house I'm at most of the time. One of the biggest and most important parts of my job is to ensure that all of the individuals are given the opportunity to accomplish their hopes and dreams by listening to them and working with them to make a plan. It's pretty amazing to see their dreams come true. I am also CPR/First Aid trained and receive a refresher every year.
As a DSP, I assisted clients with planning outings for the month, assisted the APD with setting up more hands on activities for clients to make learning more fun and found new places for the clients to explore in the community. We focused on engagement and enrichment in the activities provided both in center and our in the community. I was (and still am) a med passer and DOT certified.
We were a site that assisted high school and post high school students (ages 16-21) with life skills to better prepare them for life after graduation. Throughout my years at 916 I've helped provide deescalation techniques to elevated students, work tasks in both our work center and in the classroom with work boxes. I was a van driver for a majority of my years with the district and would accompany students into the community and to/from tour of potential placements as students got closer to graduation. I have also assisted students with eating, bathrooming/peri-care, augmentative communication devices (PEC symbols, switches, communication boards, go talk's etc). I've also assisted students with OT/PT/speech ordered services. Almost all my years with the district I was trained in CPI with a refresher yearly and my last year was trained in PCM. My last year few years with the district I supported a 1:1 student with all aspects of her day. Every year we were trained on Epi-pens, allergies, feeding tubes and seizure protocols. All of these were specific to the students we interacted with the most.
I have a love and respect for all individuals with disabilities I'm a team player who is patient and understanding even in the harder moments I am a great problem solver and independent thinker who enjoys seeing individuals work hard toward any goals they set for themselves
