As an independent visual journalist, used my skills as a photographer, videographer, reporter and editor to cover international news and documentary projects for The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic Magazine, The New Yorker, TIME Magazine, and others.

  • Since 2022, covered the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, contributing photography, video, audio recordings, drone footage, feature writing and breaking news reporting for The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, and The Daily.
  • Since 2014, been an industry leader in mobile storytelling and social media. Named inaugural Instagram Photographer of the Year by TIME Magazine. Personal Instagram account, @dguttenfelder, reaches more than 1.1 million followers. Recognized by the Webby Awards, the Shorty Award for mobile journalism, and the Online Journalism Awards. A member of the panel lecture, "The Smartphone & The News," at the SXSW digital conference. Taught the first National Geographic Explorer's Mobile Phone Photography & Video workshops.

  • From the AP's Tokyo and New Delhi regional headquarters, edited and co-managed a staff of more than 60 visual journalists and editors from Pakistan to New Zealand.
  • Photographed breaking news and enterprise stories across Asia and the Middle East.
  • Lead and implemented AP's digital and mobile storytelling innovations across our Asia bureaus.
  • Helped negotiate the opening of the AP bureau in Pyongyang, the first western news agency to have an office in North Korea. As a visual journalist, made nearly 50 reporting trips to the otherwise-isolated country.
  • Recruited, trained and managed the Pulitzer prize-winning AP photo staff in Iraq from 2003-2005. Lead all AP format coverage of the US-led military operations in Afghanistan. The acting managing photo editor for Israel & Palestinian Territories from the AP Jerusalem bureau 2000-2001.
  • As a photographer and videographer, covered three Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Athens, and Beijing.
  • During this 15-year period as AP Chief Asia photographer, I was an eight-time World Press Photo Award winner and a seven-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. I was awarded the ICP Infinity Prize for Photojournalism. I was recognized by the Overseas Press Club of America with the John Faber, Olivier Rebbot, & Feature Photography awards. I was named Pictures of the Year International and the NPPA Photojournalist of the Year. A photograph I made in North Korea in 2012 was named among TIME Magazine's "100 Most Influential Photographs Ever Made.”
