As part of the NOYCE 2026 scholarship cohort, paid interns receive stipends from the government for their hours in the school as well as tuition assistance, with the agreement that upon graduation interns will complete a minimum of four years in a high needs district in their field of study. As a mathematics and Education dual major participating in the NOYCE program, the internship at Fargo North High School consisted of observing, creating lesson plans and classroom activities, assisting with grading, tutoring students and teaching the class. This internship requires 100 hours in the classroom per semester, and allows for additional and more hands-on experience alongside the regular clinicals required to complete an education degree.
Mathematics tutors employed by Concordia College had a weekly hour requirement necessary to fulfill, either through walk-in tutoring availability during scheduled walk-in hours, or by appointment. Working with students during walk-in hours required an ability to assess which tasks are most time sensitive, and the ability to move between students as they worked. Due to varying student needs and how common it was to have many more students than tutors, it was important that every tutor was able to work together to manage students' needs. Similarly, during one on one tutoring appointments the main priority of the tutor is to assess the students' needs and assist them in whatever manner seems most helpful to their overall content comprehension in the time allotted for the appointment.
The Cobber Food Pantry operates during regular college semesters.
During the school year, pantry workers were expected to maintain the food pantry, communicate with other local pantries and create and distribute advertisements for the pantry's use across campus. While working for the Cobber Food Pantry, the pantry location was changed and the availability for use more than doubled in the new location. This meant there was need for resourcefulness and even more communication with local food providers, as well as an increase in responsibility and in work load.

While employed at Brookside Elementary school, my position was funded by a stipend provided by the government, as part of the Americorp program. Adventures plus staff have similar responsibilities as childcare workers, but with additional educational components. The Americorp staff were also tasked with updating the lesson plan database–sorting through currently existing lesson plans and editing them to be as clear as possible, while also adding lesson plans which staff created using the Adventures Plus lesson plan template. Adventures plus staff must then be fluent in the lesson plans’ structure, and able to teach any lesson plan as they are directed.
Due to a transition in management at the time of arrival, the working environment for the Hornbacher’s Caribou was very stressful for this period of time. Shifts were scheduled with little regard to workers’ availability, which made this position difficult to maintain while in college. However, working as a barista was beneficial in aiding the development of task management skills.

Most workers begin as a general kitchen staff, but with experience and the development of positive relations with both the owner and other staff members it is possible to advance to a shift manager or store manager position. Due to age it was not possible to fulfill a store manager position, but as shift manager I was responsible for managing the staff currently in store and routing delivery drivers in an efficient manner. This job required the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and the ability to work well as a team. Management additionally required creativity and the ability to fulfill a leadership role when necessary.
(seasonal position - June-Aug.)
Counseling at a ministry-based camp consisted of caring for 7-12 campers a week. Counselors are expected to lead self-written devotionals as well as planning and leading events, working in the kitchen, working for the cleaning services, and any other needed positions at any given time. Counseling is largely considered volunteer work, as there is no hourly wage and the only pay received is a small travel stipend to cover the cost of commuting to and from the camp location. The job requires a certain measure of adaptability, and counselors must be responsible and observant, making sure to provide for campers’ needs.
