Work History

Freight Conductor

Union Pacific Railroad
01.2008 - Current
  • Work with engineer, yardmasters, dispatchers, utility employees to complete freight car setouts, pickups, switch rail cars, and safely see the train across my territory to its destination or crew change point.
  • Clear, concise communication was of utmost importance; a valuable gained skill from seventeen years of learning from the best.
  • On call, often the trains worked nights, weekends, holidays. I normally maintained perfect attendance as I currently have. Trains care little for extreme weather, and I dress accordingly and use the PPE provided to keep warm enough in winter and cool in summer.
  • This position requires being dependable, reliable, and punctual. It also helps to listen, to think on your feet, and to communicate using two-way radio.
  • I recently failed my periodic FRA color vision test and I seek different work that doesn't require such good color perception. I'm confident I can learn any skilled craft nearly as well as I learned train operations.

Bricklayer

Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union
05.1998 - 12.2007
  • Worked with and for several signatory contractors as each experienced slumps and busy times. Some twice or more. All welcomed me back, though long ago.
  • Constructed and repaired brick, concrete block, and stone structures for commercial and residential customers.
  • Read blueprints and specifications.
  • Work with foremen, laborers, and operators as a coordinated team to keep high production safely in a tidy job site.
  • Estimate quantities of brick, block, stone, scaffolding, and time to reach milestones at cleanup time, end of week, or end of job when a foreman in the last years.
  • When commercial construction slumped in 2007, I joined the railroad. I've recently laid brick on our local church addition and still enjoy it.
