I have spent the majority of my adult career in EMS. I have proven my ability to manage high-pressure situations and improve patient outcomes. I have the resilience to continue doing my job effectively after tragic calls. I have worked across a very diverse range of settings and treated a wide range of patients. This range of patients has given understanding and competency when treating people who come from various cultural and social backgrounds. I feel called to help people, I handle stressful situations well, I know my background in EMS will aid my transition to working in an emergency room.
Proficiency in emergency interventions and assessments of an incredibly diverse range of patients and situations. These skills include things such as cardiac monitoring/interpretation, airway control with techniques ranging from intubation to bi-level ventilation, pain control, sedation, bleeding control, field reduction of injures to restore CMS function.
Compassionate bedside manner and effective patient communication.
Strong situational and scene control leading to better patient outcomes and provider safety.
Ability to recognize and assess severity of patient medical/trauma complaints and triage appropriately.
Have safely administered a wide range of medications appropriately in chaotic environments while always performing medications safety checks to ensure no medication errors.
Strong communication skills as I am often the senior provider on scene, this means I am communicating with first response, my co-workers and giving reports to receiving facilities as well as communicating with dispatch and med control when necessary.
FTO/Trainer experience. I have worked as a trainer and FTO for Mayo as well as other services and successfully trained numerous EMTs as well as paramedic providers.
I was a shift supervisor and successfully manged 4 - 24 hour crews before moving to Mayo.
This included responsibilities such as narcotics oversight and accountability; ensuring documentation was being completed by all crews; organizing inter-facility transports; education and training of new hires; and follow up on any complaints received from staff or patients.
I was also a full time paramedic during this time and lead by example which meant my administrative responsibilities did not give me leave to bypass 911 calls or transports.
This was my first and longest EMS job, I worked 24 hour shifts for a high call volume service for very little pay. I gained excellent experience during this time and learned what it was to really dig deep when you are mentally and physically drained.
